IRB SBS # 2013-0101-00 FAQ:

Q: How do I know if my child or teen is "socially anxious?"
A: Social anxiety is more than just a shy or introverted personality. Social anxiety is when youth experience a lot more stress than other kids their age around their peers and other adults. They may experience this extreme distress in unstructured social situations like parties or sporting events, or when giving a speech or other performance. The distress is so great, that these youth want to avoid these kinds of situations. If you think your child or teen experiences more fear of embarrassment and more distress in social situations than other youth his/her age, and your child or teen often wants to avoid these situations, s/he may be eligible for our study.

Q: Does my child or teen have to have been diagnosed by a health care professional?
A: No. We will conduct a clinical interview in our first assessment to determine diagnosis.

Q: What if my child is in treatment already?
A: Children receiving treatment are eligible if they have been in the same treatment for 6 weeks, and they do not foresee changes to treatment for three months.

Q: I've read this website and I'm still not sure whether my child would qualify.
A: Please get in touch! We'd love to talk to you about your child.
